Capturing Candid Moments with Toddlers in Austin, TX

Family photography sessions with toddlers are always an adventure, and my recent session with Kristin, Matt, and their energetic 3-year-old, Hank, in Austin, TX was no exception. We met at Bull Creek Park on a sunny afternoon, where nature's beauty provided the perfect backdrop for their family story.

With toddlers, flexibility is the name of the game! Sometimes, the little ones aren’t interested in sitting still or striking a pose—and that’s okay. Some of the most magical photos come from letting their personalities shine. Here’s how we made the most of the day:

1. Nose Kisses with Mom

To capture a tender moment between Kristin and Hank, I asked Hank to lean in and give his mom a “nose kiss.” It was such a sweet moment filled with giggles, and the result was a frame full of love and connection.

2. Superhero Poses with Dad

Matt and Hank teamed up for some action-packed superhero fun! I asked Hank to show me his best superhero pose with Dad, and he delivered with big energy and enthusiasm. These kinds of prompts bring out so much personality and are always a hit with little ones.

3. Letting Hank Explore

Hank had a blast wandering around Bull Creek, curious about everything around him. Instead of trying to direct his every move, we let him explore while keeping Kristin and Matt close in the background. These moments captured the joy and freedom of childhood while still showcasing the family’s connection.

The Result?

A gallery filled with genuine smiles, playful interactions, and heartfelt moments that reflect who they are as a family. Kristin and Matt’s patience and love for Hank made the session flow beautifully, even when Hank’s toddler energy took over.

If you’re considering a session with your little one, remember—it’s all about embracing their spirit and letting them lead the way (with a little guidance, of course!).

Bonus Tip: A Chance for Updated Headshots!

When toddlers decide they’re not interested in being on camera, I take it as an opportunity to grab a few updated headshots of mom and dad to use for work or social profiles. During this session, I photographed Kristin and Matt individually while Hank explored nearby. It’s a great way to maximize the session time and give parents a little something extra to enjoy!
